Established in 1995, the Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge (CBIK) is a non-profit NGO. Its members are mainly from diverse universities and institutions including research professionals of natural and social sciences, managers and practitioners of biodiversity and cultural diversity conservation, as well as enthusiasts and volunteers in interest.

Collection and using of indigenous knowledge are a critical way to discover new bio-resources in industry and to develop participatory biodiversity conservation practices at the grass-root level.


Over the last two decades, with the support from IUCN, WWF, ICIMOD, ILEIA, IDRC and Yunnan Government, , Forestry Department, CBIK has devoted to ethnobotanical studies and biodiversity conservation actions at the grass-root level in . Also, CBIK has developed its approaches in addressing the aspirations of local groups whose visions of the future rely on the continuity of their livelihoods and maintaining biological and cultural diversity through applying indigenous knowledge. To date, CBIK has been widely recognized and greatly praised in its field.
